The Buffalo Safari: An 8 Day Camping Adventure

The Buffalo Safari

This adventure safari is perfect for those with limited time who still want to visit the great wilderness areas of Botswana.  Starting in Maun, Botswana and ending at Victoria Falls, this affordable safari is long on adventure yet ideal for those traveling on a budget.  The Buffalo Safari passes through the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, two areas that offer some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa.  Located in the remote bush, most campsites are private, wild, and unfenced.  It's not unusual to have wildlife wander through camp.  The Buffalo Safari is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the daily rhythms and magic of the African wilderness.

The Buffalo Safari is a "participation mobile camping safari" because guests "participate" by setting up their own tent, carrying their luggage from the vehicle to the tent, and sleeping on a mattress pad (not a bed or cot).  The safari runs with one vehicle and a trailer to haul all the supplies as you move from camp to camp.  Many guests will also pitch in with the cooking, though this is not required.  Each safari is accompanied by a professional guide and a camp assistant who will ensure your safari is safe, educational, and fun.

BRIEF ITINERARY

Days 1-3: Moremi Game Reserve, Camping

The safari begins in Maun, where your guide will meet you at 07h30 at a pre-arranged meeting point. From Maun you will drive through to Moremi Game Reserve, one of the best wilderness areas of Botswana which covers swamp and dry areas. During a short break en-route, your guide will give you a full overview of your safari. The next three days will be spent searching for the wide variety of wildlife and birds that this area is renowned for while absorbing the sounds and beauty of this region. Game drives in the early morning as the sun rises and in the late afternoon as the sun sets will be the norm. After your morning game drives, you will return to camp for lunch and a siesta. On Day 3 you will move campsites to explore a different area of this diverse park. Camping will be in private designated campsites with bush ablutions. (Day 1: Lunch, Dinner; Days 2 & 3: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Days 4-6: Chobe National Park, Camping

Chobe National Park, with its diverse and striking landscapes, will be your next destination.  As you continue your search for wildlife, you will traverse the drier region of Savuti where bull elephants dot the plains.  You will then head northwards to the Chobe River where your game drives will meander along the banks of the river, followed by the call of the majestic African Fish Eagle. Camping will be in private designated areas with bush ablutions, first in the Savuti area (Savute Main or Zwei Zwei Pan) (Day 4), then in the northern part of the park closer to the riverfront (Day 5 & 6). (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Days 7-8: Livingstone, Zambia, comfortable lodge

After a short morning game drive you will cross the Zambezi River by ferry and then drive to Livingstone on the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls (visa required), where you will spend the night at a comfortable lodge. In the afternoon there will be time to visit the thunderous Victoria Falls and shop for curios.  Dinner will be at your own expense at the lodge. The safari officially ends at 10h00 on Day 8.   (Day 7 – Breakfast, Lunch & Day 8 - Breakfast)

Cape Buffalo, Moremi

The Cape Buffalo

The Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a widespread grazer found in many habitats throughout Africa.  It can succeed in a variety of environments provided a water source is nearby.  It lives in swamps, grasslands, forests, floodplains, and even in high mountains.

The Cape Buffalo is a large species and has an ornery reputation.  Shoulder heights can be up to 5.5 ft, length up to 11 ft, and weight from 600-1,000 pounds.  The distinctive large, curved horns are fused at the base forming a thick bony plate called a "boss".
