Your Safari with GrassTrack
What to expect:
For our August 2009 safari, GrassTrack will be partnering with Swampland Safari Trails of Maun, Botswana. Operating in the heart of Botswana's game country Swampland has been leading clients in the region for 20 years. This is a participation mobile camping safari with accommodation in tents and hotels when we return to town.
John and I will be your trip leaders from the moment we collect you at the airport until we drop you off for your flight home. Upon arrival we'll spend a day in Johannesburg before flying to Victoria Falls where we'll meet our guide and driver, the owner of Swampland, Ian Milne. The roads throughout the parks are typically rough so transport will be in 4X4 Toyota Land Cruiser/Land Rovers, fully supplied with all necessary camping gear: tents, sleeping bags/pads, cooking gear/fuel, spare tires, and repair equipment.
A typical day consists of an early morning for a game drive, some bird-watching, or photography. There are a wide range of activities in Victoria Falls including white-water rafting, bungee jumping, river cruises, fishing or simply admire one of biggest waterfalls on the planet.
We try to minimize long driving days, but depending on the itinerary we will have some days of long driving. This will provide time for watching the beautiful African landscape pass by or for catching up on some reading. Camps are made in established public or private sites complete with braai pits (the South African term for a BBQ grill) and hot showers. In the main towns of Maun and Victoria Falls we'll stay in budget hotels.
We will have many nights in rustic campsites with few amenities. In Chobe park we will stay at unfenced, wild campsites. There are no amenities so we must carry in all our supplies. However the possibility of an elephant wandering by your tent will surely make up for the lack of hot water! In the evening we'll share our stories of the day around a fire with a bottle of fine South African wine. As the campfire dies away, you'll drift asleep to the sounds of the African night...
Following Chobe and Moremi, we'll resupply and head east to explore the vast salt pans of Nxai and Mkgadikgadi before heading north and completing our journey at Victoria Falls.
Who may enjoy this type of trip:
If you enjoy the outdoors, hiking, nature, and have an adventurous spirit, this trip is for you. We’re looking for clients who seek the “road not taken”, who realize travel of this nature may require some patience and imagination. Ideally, you’ll know how to live out of a duffel bag, enjoy sleeping in a tent and cooking your own meals. Clients interested in birdwatching and the outdoors in general will certainly appreciate our style.
