The Kalahari & Okavango Safari: A Special, 11 Day Adventure

Kalahari & Okavanago Safari

The “Green Season” is a special time of year to visit Botswana.  By December the rains have finally arrived transforming the dry, dusty bush into a green, lush wonderland.  Wildlife takes advantage of this bounty as they gather in large herds to give birth.  Large predators stalk the herds in hopes of an easy meal.  Zebra and other plains game migrate south from the Chobe region to graze on the fresh grass of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  Birds show off their colorful breeding plumage, joined by migrants escaping the northern hemisphere’s winter.

On the Kalahari & Okavango Safari, you will journey through the Kalahari Desert and learn about ancient Bushmen culture, visit the endless grasslands of Nxai Pan and Makgadikgadi Pan in search of the zebra migration, search for all the classic African game in the Moremi Game Reserve, and glide across the Okavango Delta in a traditional dugout canoe.  Accommodation will be in lodges for 2 nights and luxury camping for 8 nights.

Learn More About The Kalahari & Okavango Safari

Day 1: Kalahari Desert Region; Haina Safari Lodge

The safari begins in Maun, where your guide will meet you upon arrival.  You'll head south to spend your first night in Botswana at the Haina Safari Lodge on the border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.  You'll arrive mid to late afternoon. Enjoy sundowners around the fire on your first night in Botswana and an evening presentation on Conservation, Nights Skies & the San People of the Kalahari by an expert on all subjects - Mr Paul Sheller.  (Day 1: Lunch, Dinner)

Days 2-4: Central Kalahari Game Reserve; Luxury Mobile Camping

Following an early breakfast, you'll depart on a walk in the Kalahari with the resident San Bushmen. After a 2 hour drive you enter the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Deception Valley in time for lunch in our mobile camp. We will spend the next three nights in the Reserve on game drives in search of Kalahari lions, zebras, wildebeest and other game.  The desert transforms at this time of year with red sand covered with a carpet of grass and wildflowers.  (Day 2-4: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Days 5-6: Makgadikgadi Pans National Park; Luxury Mobile Camping

We pack and move camp east to the expansive grasslands of the Makgadikgadi Pans in search of the huge numbers of zebra (up to 25000 animals) that leave the Boteti river system and concentrate on the open grasslands in search of nutritious grasses to give birth to their young. Despite their numbers they can be elusive and we spend the next two nights in search of the herds and exploring this vast open landscape.  (Day 5-6: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 7: Private Concession near Makgadikgadi Park; Camp Kalahari (lodge)

After breakfast and a short morning game drive we pack camp and head further east to Camp Kalahari in a private concession just outside the park. You'll arrive in time for lunch and to settle into your tents at Camp Kalahari.  In the afternoon, we head out for a late afternoon drive in search of the meerkats. Dinner will be serviced at the lodge.  (Day 7: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Days 8-10: Moremi Game Reserve & Okavango Delta; Luxury Mobile Camping

An early morning road transfer takes us from the Makgadikgadi to Maun in time for lunch at a quaint local restaurant and then a road transfer to the mobile safari camp in the Khwai area adjoining the Moremi Game Reserve.  The Moremi and Okavango regions are famous for abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, and various antelope.  It's one of the best places to see the rare African wild dog. We spend the next three nights camping at a campsite in the adjoining community area exploring the Khwai floodplains on game drives both during the day and at night. Experience a 2 ½ hour mekoro trip exploring the waterways of Khwai which is the most eastern reach of the Okavango River system.  (Day 8-10: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 11: Departure

Following our customary early morning breakfast and early game drive we say goodbye to our back up team and camp staff and head back to Maun.  You'll have the option of taking a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta and back to Maun (this is optional and at additional cost).
